as a method for enriching and deepening the awareness

to the Structure of the body.

Out of a state of physical release, listening and awareness to the flow of energies within the posture and form of the body -is made possible. Through the body's architecture we will emphasize kinetic and acrobatic work and together with

Michael Schumacher Workshop

Improvisation and Instant Composition

The aim of this workshop is to develop conscious presence while improvising in a performance.

Each session begins with exercises that explore relationships between thought, movement and presence in the immediate environment. By promoting a greater awareness of sensory input, the performer becomes better equipped to realize each moment's potential for composition.

The session continues with examples of structured and non-structured improvisation that include such elements as dance, music, text, and light. Through practice and theory, participants explore a process by which they collectively experience spontaneously created compositions.

Artists of all disciplines are welcome at this workshop.

Michael Schumacher

has been a member of Ballet Frankfurt, Twyla Tharp Dance,

the Feld Ballet, and the Pretty Ugly Dance Company. A key collaborative figure in several of Peter Sellars’ productions, Schumacher has appeared in Bijbelse Stukken, Peony Pavilion, El Nino, Bach Cantatas, and La Passion de Simone. He has been featured in productions of Cora Bos-Kroese, Dana Caspersen, Anouk van Dijk,

Mark Haim, Chico Katsube, Ruth Meyer, and Paul Selwyn Norton.

As a choreographer Schumacher has twice collaborated with the dancers of Ballet Frankfurt, creating Splendor Shed (1990) and Blender Head (1994). With his brother Steven, he created Unwrapped (1995), a solo dance event that he performed in Germany, the Netherlands and the U.S. In collaboration with Daniela Graca, Marcelo Evelin, and Anat Geiger, he created ANDAMAMI (2000) and Glashuis (2001). For the dancers of Nederlands Dans Theater III, he conceived and directed The Moment (2001).

Over the last 10 years, Schumacher’s work has been featured regularly at the Holland Dance Festival, beginning with the duet Work # 1 (1997) with Sylvie Guilliem

choreographed by Dana Caspersen; the solo Michael Schumacher (2001) as part of Richard Move’s MARTHA; and Piping Hot ‘Hutspot’(2003), a series of improvised duets with master Dutch musicians Han Bennink, Cor Fuhler and Wilbert de Joode.

A leading figure in the discipline of improvisation, Schumacher has collaborated with cellist and composer Alex Waterman on several occasions: Heaven Is A Radio (2003)

at the Frascati Theater in Amsterdam; Dans le Jardin (2004) at the Biennale de la Danse in Lyon and at the STEPS Festival in Switzerland (2006); and Six Suites (2005) at the Holland Dance Festival in Den Haag. 2008 Improvisation Workshop by Katie Duck

Steep Slope workshop Vol.7

February 4 (Mon) .2008 〜 February 6(Wed) .2008 18:00〜21:00

"The ear experiences and reads. The eye reads and experiences."

The content of this workshop is geared toward performing artists and musicians who are interested in amplifying live time in a performance space and practicing interdisciplinary art activities. Warm-up and exercises emphasis how the eyes, ears and mind work in co ordination with movement, sound in space and time. Improvisation sessions revolve around the terms Pause, Flow and Exit with discussions articulating body, play, memory and presence. The aim is to provide a situation where dancers and musicians can grow in confidence in how they perform live dancing and music while articulating composition concerns related to the performance setting without the use of pre set materials.

The eye experiences when aimed in the direction of space (infinite). When set to stare on captured movements done by elegant figures the brain begins to function quite differently...it reads. Body becomes object. This process of reading with the eye inhibits the ability for the ear to work .We do not use the ear to hear object. My aim is to provide a place for publics to access the full range of their senses and their feelings.

"Feelings of pain or pleasure, or some quality in between, are the bedrock of our minds. We often fail to notice this simple reality because the mental images of the words and sentences that describe them use up so much of our overburdened attention. But there they are, feelings of myriad emotions and related states, the continuous musical line of our minds, the unstoppable humming of the most universal of melodies that only dies down when we are occupied by joy, or a mournful requiem when sorrow takes over"

Katie Duck Bio

Katie Duck is a dancer, choreographer and teacher. From 1973-6 she toured with the company Salt Lake City Mime Troupe. She left the United States in 1976 to live in Amsterdam, Holland and toured throughout Europe as a performer in solo productions, in duet with Carlos Traffic, and in improvisations with the local music artists.

In 1979, she moved to Italy where she formed the company GROUPO, which toured through out Europe with the productions Ruttles, The Orange Man, Brown eye Green eye and Mind the gap. In 1986 she accepted a senior lecturer position at Dartington College of Arts teaching for the theatre department and led the choreography course. In 1991 she accepted a position at the AHK dance department in Amsterdam where she teaches composition, improvisation and technique.

Throughout her career, Katie Duck has worked with music and dance artists who share her passion for collaborating music, text and dance in improvised performances. She has performed and collaborated in productions with Tristan Honsinger, Michael Moore, Derek Bailey, Alex Maguire, Michael Vatcher and many others. Besides participating as a performer and composer, she has initiated numerous dance and music improvisation projects in her three bases Holland, Italy and England.

In her current base, Amsterdam, her initiatives include an improvisation series (monthly) at the Fijnhout Theater and the Muiderpoort Theater (1994-9), The Melkweg Theater (2000-2001) a (yearly) Improvisation festival at the Frascati Theater (1994-9), Magpie Music Dance Company (from 1995).

She is currently touring Asia, the USA and Europe with her solo work, professional workshops, with Magpie Music Dance Company, is a teacher for both the SNDO and MTD at the AHK Hooge school voor de kunsten and continues to collaborate with both music and dance artists all over the world.
